Big Ten Fans Jump to Satellite TV
November 9, 2007
You would almost think its a conspiracy hatched up by the satellite TV companies, Dish Network and Directv. Have a secret backdoor meeting with the commisioner of a power sports conference, in this case the Big 10.
Encourage them to start their own sports network right before football season. Tantilize them with big dollars, and a great deal to carry the network immediately on satellite TV. Then, things take their natural course from there. Cable companies like Comcast, Charter, and Time Warner of course know they have higher costs to maintain their networks. So they fight over the costs to carry the new Big 10 channel.
Cable companies are continuing to refuse to carry the network until they get a good deal. Currently the Big 10 is asking for $1.10 per customer in Big 10 states. Cable companies are trying to hold down costs that will be passed along to their end-users, as they already charge more than satellite TV companies.
Meanwhile, Dish Network satellite and DirecTV continue to grow their subscriber base. Sports fans bail in droves, making the switch to satellite tv in order to get the games they want to see. While the conspiracy part of this scenario is the stuff of Hollywood lore, theend result for Dish Network and DirecTV couldn’t be better.
