Is DirecTV finally pulling ahead?

November 11, 2007

For years, DirecTV and Dish Network have not only been battling the cable competition, they have been battling each other.  With the most recent quarterly results now in, an arguement can be made that DirecTV may be winning the battle of the satellite tv wars.

Echostar, parent of the Dish Network, reported earnings on Friday November 9th.  They reported a net increase in subscibers of 110,000 against subsciber growth of 295,000 in the third quarter a year ago.   DirecTV reported  subscriber growth of 240,000, an increase of 45% over last years third quarter numbers.

These numbers show quite a startling change of fortune in the satellite tv war.  DirecTV is showing marked growth, and while Dish Network is still growing, their subscriber growth was actually 63% lower when comparing this quarter to the 2006 quarter.  As the following chart shows, Wall Street has also favored DirecTV over the last six months, with a share price increase of about 10% versus a flat performance from Dish Network.
