DirecTV slapped! (with a restraining order)

November 15, 2007

Billionaire Mark Cuban and his company HDNet won the first battle against DirecTV today, as a court slapped a temporary restraining order against the satellite tv company.

Now normally, rich guys fighting among themselves isn’t all that interesting. Lawyers, judges and courtrooms are tied up months on end while everyone decides how to divide up millions of dollars. But some pretty juicy qoutes and accusations have been served up against DirecTV. For example, check this one:

HDNet says via the court petition that DirecTV has “decided to effectively kill HDNet’s viewership by moving the two HDNet networks from their current DirecTV broadcast package — where the channels are available to more than 2 million households — to a newly created, obscure and overpriced package that puts the HDNet channels well beyond the reach of the average television viewer.”

Newly created, obsucure and overpriced? Sounds like my blog! Well, except the overpriced part. Anyway, Mark Cuban can always be counted on for fun and games, and certainly his battle with DirecTV will be one to watch.

Directv had completely emptied my bank account out after I cancelled in Dec 09. This Sunday, Jan 31st 10, I pulled up my bank account info only to find that I had a -4.80 balance because Directv had literally taken every single dime I had. I was not a member of Auto-Pay, they only had my Debit Card info because I made a payment over the internet (on a month to month basis never automatically withdrawn) once or twice. I was never warned that this was going to happen, I never signed a contract that said if I cancelled (even though I was no longer under the 1 year contract that I signed 3 years ago) that they could automatically save my account info and take every penny I had to my name. I have begun research this and it seems I am not the first person that this has happened to, there are thousands, and most are trying to sue. I was told by Dtv that I would be recieving a refund in 3-4 days but from what I have read, I will not see a dime of that money, and if somehow I find a way to dispute it, I still wont see a penny for several months. This is devestating. It was the 31st. My rent is due, my gas is facing shut off and I don’t even have cash to put in my tank to get to and from work. They took almost 900 dollars out of my account and have promised 660 back…. I will never see that money.
