Satellite TV….The new prison benefit?

November 17, 2007

So will the prisoners vote for Dish Network or DirecTV?

The warden of the Clayton County Correctional Institution, in the Atlanta, Georgia area, wants permission to spend money on satellite TV to keep his 226 inmates occupied watching football. It is being referred to as a “management tool”

Warden Frank Taylor is asking the Clayton County Commission to let him sign up for satellite tv service for less than $100 a month. It would be funded with money collected at the prison’s commissary and pay phones, so in theory, no taxpayer dollars would be used. Last year those funds amounted to $41,000.

Monday Night Football is evidently the reason for the push. Since Monday night games are now on ESPN, free tv doesn’t quite do the trick. The warden claimed that upwards of 90 percent of inmates watching the football games, so it adds another “management tool” to keep the prisoners happy.

Satellite TV would be quite an upgrade as the current setup only allows two TV channels, often with poor reception. The Clayton County Commission will vote on Taylor’s request next week.
