Dish Network Promises More HD

January 7, 2008

After getting smacked around in 2007 by DirecTV in the HD marketplace, Dish Network today announced their own HD plan for 2008. Dish announced plans to increase their local HD coverage to 65 new markets, which would bring their total local market HD reach to 100. They also announced plans to increase their national HD channel count to 100 in 2008.

In order to facilitate the increase Dish Network plans to launch three more satellites this year. Additional satellites are necessary to provide the necessary bandwidth needed for DishHD programming.

The announcement highlighted new local HD market launches in Austin, TX; Baltimore, MD; Cleveland, OH; Orlando, FL; and Richmond, VA among others. No specific date start date was mentioned for local channel HD to start in these areas. According to DISH, their local channel HD coverage will reach 80% of U.S. households after the upgrade.

Dish Network also announced that new a new DishHD packages will soon be available. While the network has previously only offered one HD package offered at $20 a month, starting in February Dish promiese packages from $10 a month which will include 20 of the most popular HD channels. Exact DishHD pricing and the channels included were not included in the press release.

Satellite TV provider Direct TV promised 100 HD channels by year-end 2007, but fell a little short, coming in with 87. However their 100 channel promise has played well in the marketplace, as most recognize Direct TV as the current HD leader.
