DirecTV Raising Prices?

January 18, 2008

While no “official” word has come from DirecTV, reports are leaking that DirecTV will be raising prices at the end of February.

According to Multichannel news, the prices will increase an average of 4% versus the current pricing structure.  DirecTV may have a little more pricing power versus its primary competitor Dish Network.  DirecTV’s CEO recently made comments that they would not feel much pressure from the current economic slowdown, as many of their customers are considered higher income subscibers.

Dish Network held the line on some packages until 2009 in a highly promoted announcement last week at the Consumer Electronics Show.  Dish froze prices on their Dish Family and DishDVR Advantage packages until next year.  Upon closer examination, however, Dish raised prices on average 8% by increasing package pricing on their America’s Top 100 and America’s Top 200.

The rumored DirecTV price increase is expected to be in the area of $3 a month for packages including its Choice Xtra and Plus HD DVR selections.   Most pay television providers have bitten the bullet and increased prices in 2008 due to higher costs associated with carriage of HD programming.
