Update: 2010 Celebrity Beach Bowl
In a press release today, satellite TV company DIRECTV laid out their promotional plan for the second annual Celebrity Beach Bowl. Described in the release as the “World’s Wildest Flag Football Game” the game is presented by Spike HD.
Two competing teams, named after DIRECTV’s exclusive sports packages, will compete on Super Thursday. Thursday? Yes that’s right, at 5pm Eastern, the teams take the field. Team NFL Sunday Ticket will be coached by Matt Leinart, who will also host the event. The “returning champions” will be quarterbacked by Doug Flutie, who will be joined by teammates Rocket Ismail, Daryl Johnston, Michael Clarke Duncan, Blake Lively and Stacey Keibler.
Team NASCAR Hotpass will be coached by the flamboyant Chad Johnson. Leading the team on the field will be quarterback Warren Moon, joined by teammates David Spade, Pam Anderson, Kendra Wilkinson, Merril Hoge, Desmond Howard, January Jones, and Fall Out Boy’s Pete Wentz. Fall Out Boy and Josh Kelley will also provide musical entertainment.
Other “celebrities” involved in the Beach Bowl include live analysis and play-by-play from Andrew Siciliano, Michael Irvin and Shannon Sharpe. Officials will include ESPN Analyst Michael Smith and Pro Bowl Chicago Bears linebacker Lance Briggs. DIRECTV’s Jon Gieselman, senior VP of advertising and PR for DIRECTV goes overboard in describing the epic match-up this way:
“Pit NFL greats, actors, and models in a flag-football game on the beach all in the name of charity — anything can happen. Our build up to the Super Bowl was such a success last year, that we decided to do it bigger and better by building our own stadium and airing it live in HD on The 101. Where else can you see Doug Flutie throw a Hail Mary to Pam Anderson while being blitzed by David Spade? It’s going to be another wild time for all.”
Okay Jon, guess I don’t need to tune into the real game after all.
As Mr. Gieselman mentioned, the game will be on DIRECTV’s original entertainment channel, The 101. Those without DIRECTV can see the game at directv.com, or carry on with life knowing that they didn’t miss anything.
