The new year introduced another member to an exclusive club, as Verizon topped the 1 million subsciber mark last month. Verizon FIOS TV, which brings cable television to residential subsribers via fiber optic technology, has certainly been an expensive foray for the company, but is now beginning to pay off.
According to Verizon, the company had 717,000 subscribers as of September 30, 2007. That number increased to 943,000 by 2007 year-end. The company stated that they thus signed up their millionth customer in January.
Verizon now counts 1.8 million video customers, but uses fuzzy math to reach that conclusion. To reach that figure, Verizon counts the satellite TV customers that sign up through Verizon’s partnership to resell DIRECTV service.
Nevertheless, Verizon has made huge inroads against both cable and satellite tv providers. Verizon’s pay-tv service is now available to over 9 million households, and should be available to upwards of 12 million residences by year end 2008. The company estimates it has hit a penetration rate of 16% across the markets that have fiber to the home access.

I love Verizon Fios. Had Direct TV for about 6 years, but when they put in the fiber here I decided to give it a try. Man it was a mess when they put the fiber into the neighborhood, but I see why they did it. Everything works so fast and smooth now. If they only had the Sunday ticket, I’d be set…
I really like the new Verizon Fios service. Had DirectTV for about 6 years, but there was no way we were going to pay for Sunday Ticket again this year, much to the dismay of my hubby.
Anyway, got into a Fios package for around $100 a month. The internet service is screaming fast, cant beat it. The TV looks just as good as DirectTV, and the price is awesome. Cant see ever leaving Verizon
