DISH Network Makes HD Additions

March 27, 2008

After what seems like months, DISH Network has announced its latest local HD additions. So without further delay, customers of DISH Network in these four cities will soon be the lucky recipients of local channel High Definition:

  • Orlando, Florida
  • Flint, Michigan,
  • Austin, Texas
  • West Palm Beach, Florida

These additions will bring DISH Network’s local market HD penetration rate to 54% of US television households, spanning 39 markets. DISH reiterated in a press release that they are on track to offer 100 local HD markets as well as 100 national HD channels by year end. By comparison, DIRECTV currently reaches 76% of households covering 77 local HD markets.

DISH Network’s second announcement was the addition of the New England Sports Network in HD. NESN is New England’s most watched sports network, and carries Boston Red Sox as well as Boston Bruin games. NESN also offers its own sports news and highlight show, NESN SportsDesk. All NESN games and studio shows are in HD. DISH hyped their ViP722 dishDVR as the tool needed by Boston sports fans in a second press release.

Interestingly, the announcement comes just two days after DIRECTV dropped the ball during the Red Sox opener, losing transmission signal to much of the country.
