The prices are wrong! Comcast price starts at $30 for cable television and stays there, it does not go up, unless you upgrade service, while Direct TV starts at $20 something for the first year than you'll be paying around $60 a month basic service So, the question is, would you pay $30 or $60 a month for the same programs? What would you do with that extra $30 if you go with Comcast? Branding is about making you pay more. Value is about saving you more! I have neither, I am good with local Digital TV Broadcasting in my area. And shows from A&E, History Channel, etcetera, etcetera... well, I watch them for free online the next day they air!

My first apt. in South Florida included DIRECT TV in the rent. After 15 years of COMCAST content in Northern California, the experience was a sheer REVELATION. DIRECT TV's lineup featured 6 HBO channels, and other wonderful stuff. Since then, I've moved to another building where satellite installation is not allowed. I had high hopes that Comcast's lineup would be much better here in South Florida, but I was wrong. The abundance of channels cannot mask how poor overall content is. At my old place, there were occasions when DIRECT TV's programming got interrupted by stormy weather. And for a whole week, CNBC had no sound. Still, if I had a choice, it would be a no-brainer. I would pick DIRECT TV EVERY TIME!

Just purchased Direct TV and so far im amazed. For internet, phone and standard basic HD I was paying 180 per month! I have a cellphone so I asked if I could cancel the phone to lower the price. They said if I did that it would actually go up. So I dumped everything except their internet service and went over to Direct tv. MUCH cheaper and better picture quality. Also unlike so many here my installer was fantastic. Nicest most competent dude ever.

I've been a Dish customer for about 15 years. The old 721 DVR was great, but it's no longer compatible (I suspect Tivo's lawsuit). They gave us a 522, which is a suitable replacement. It works fine, never misses recordings, and rarely needs to be reset. The fan never turns off. Our other DVR is the VIP622. It works fine as well, needs to be reset every few months. It does not miss recordings. I haven't noticed the fan.

Some of Tivo's patents demonstrate huge flaws in our patent laws

careful with Direct TV...I asked specifically if they still had issues with bad weather affecting the quality and was told by the rep that it had been resolved. Trusting him, I signed up for 2 years and immediately started having outages. They lost ABC for a week. I cancelled and got burned with a $421.00 bill that according to my credit card is not disputable. I have written the FTC and FCC. I believe they broke the contract by not providing service as promised. I not only intend to fight until I get refunded, but intend to tell any one that asks my experience. DO NOT BELIEVE ANYTHING THESE PEOPLE TELL YOU!

Some of these posts are pretty old, so I'll reply 'generally' vs individually.
I've installed A/V and Satellite systems for years, and this is my opinion.
ATT Uverse or ANY other fiber optic service provider is the way to go IF it is available in your area.
You'll miss out on some sports packages like NFL Sunday Ticket, but the HD channels and reliability are better than Direct TV.
If you read most the posts, the only real complaint about Direct TV is the 'customer service', installation crews, etc., but not about the product itself. Direct TV is a better product than ANY cable provider.
Direct TV contracts out a majority of the installations, so a lot of times you get 'Bob' from 'EZ Install Cable Company' (both name and company made up) to do the installation. 'Bob' will come over with his work order from Direct TV, and will bring ONLY the equipment on the purchase order. IF you want to make changes (upgrade to a HD DVR box), you have to contact Direct TV at least 2 work days in advance so they can send a new work order to 'Bob'. Ultimately, installers want the dish on or near the house. However, the installer can put the dish on a post a ways from the house to get line of sight to the southern sky. I could go on and on why it's a bad move for Direct TV to contract out installation, but that's just how it is
IF you do the research and know what you want before you call, then the customer service won't be able to sell you what you don't need. A little preparation and research goes a long way. When I had Direct TV, the customer service was always friendly and helped me out.
The 2 year contract is something they definitely told you about (required by law to read the disclaimer to you), and hopefully you'll have good service (pretty pricey to opt-out of the contract).

Comcast vs Direct TV? How about neither! Ive had Fios now for a month and I dont think there is ever going to be a situation that makes me even consider going back to either Direct TV or Comcast!

I use Direct TV Now. Sunday Ticket is awesome, color quality is much better and more balanced. i don't care much about HD right now. Ordering PPV is easy. but the best part is you can change your Direct TV Package online every day if you wish. There is no fee and it just prorates your new package. this is great

However, I was a HUGE movie watcher on Comcast ON DEMAND. Direct TV has on demand but it does not have nearly the selection of new movies.

The problem I have with Comcast is how shoddy their equipment is and how bad their service is. When they switched their programming so that everyone needed a cable box we called and ordered two boxes three weeks in advance. Somebody lost the order or didn't put it in and so we had to put in a second order and only got through channel 30 for a few days. It has been less than a year and we had to replace one of the two boxes after it quit working. The second of the original two boxes one day decided to start displaying a text box over one of the channels every time we change it to that channel. After it has been on the channel for five minutes the box goes away but as much as they're charging us I shouldn't have to put up with it.

We used their online chat feature to try to get them to correct the problem (don't try calling them because nobody speaks English and there is horrible background noise) but the person we got was retarded and nothing happened.

We only have TV and internet and it costs over $100 and it seems like it goes up another 5 every month or so. Occasionally you can call them and threaten to leave and they will give you a deal for 6 months as long as you stay. If they could afford to give you "deals" like that in the first place then that's where they should set their damn price to begin with. And our internet service is not very reliable as we lose connections and have to unplug and replug in the modem about every other month.

I would like to switch to fios but that is not available in my area yet. We are thinking of either going with satellite and DSL, or else just going with DSL and watching our favorite shows over the networks' websites.

And am I the only one left who doesn't care about HD?
