Xfinity Internet

June 23, 2010

With strong competition in many areas from Verizon and AT&T, Xfinity Internet now offers speeds up to 60 Mbps in select areas. So the question begs – Is Xfinity internet the right choice for you and your family? What sort of deals can you get from Xfinity in order to avoid the expensive broadband internet prices that keep going up. Lets examine what is available in this short Xfinity Internet review.

If you are already a satellite TV customer then you know that you have to find another source for your internet access. DIRECTV customers can bundle with local Telco carriers like Verizon, or you can order your high speed internet from the cable company. The main problem here is that the best Xfinity deals are usually found when you subscribe to the triple play. So if you just want Xfinity internet, what kind of pricing and speed can you expect?

There are deals on Xfinity internet for new customers, just don’t expect them to last very long. While most cable internet deals last for around a year with some discounting prices a bit for the second year, stand alone Xfinity internet is only discounted for a period of six months if you are not getting Xfinity TV as well.

The main Xfinity high speed internet product is tagged as “Performance” which offers you speeds of either 6 Mbps or 12 Mbps depending on your particular area. PowerBoost can get you up to 15 Mbps with this service, which is available for a promotional price of $19.99 a month for six months. After that, the regular Xfinity Performance price goes up to $42.95 per month.

If you want a basic Xfinity connection that won’t change in price later, then the Economy Internet service is really the only option.  For $24.95 a month you get download speeds of 1.5 Mbps and uploads of 384 Kbps.  While you will probably be frustrated with this service if you download music or movies, it will work out well for those who do basic internet surfing along with Xfinity e-mail service.

Higher Xfinity internet speeds are available as well, but you are going to have to open up your wallet a bit more for these products.   Next up is the Xfinity Blast service, with speeds maxing out at 20 Mbps downstream and 4 Mbps up.  This high speed internet product is priced at $52.95 a month.  Xfinity Ultra will move you to the next level, that being 30 Mpbs down and 7 Mbps uploading.  Priced at $62.95 a month, here you will again get the top speeds with the use of the PowerBoost option.

Finally, Xfinity now has the Extreme 50 internet speed available in select areas, which as the name implies can get you all the way up to a 50 Mbps download speed with Powerboost.  As part of Xfinity’s advertising, this product is one of their top features, and they are promising to increase speeds to 100 Mbps “in the near future”.   While the near future is not spelled out currently by Comcast, you will pay $99.95 a month in the present for this particular internet package.

All internet packages from Xfinity also include Norton Security Suite, ESPN3.com (formerly ESPN360.com), and multiple e-mail accounts for everyone.  In addition, if you have Xfinity TV you can of course take full advantage of the Fancast service which allows you to watch on demand programming on your computer.

Xfinity internet certainly presents a formidable opponent for Verizon FiOS as well as DSL services from AT&T and Qwest in many markets.  While high monthly prices for broadband connections may be an obstacle for some, others who telecommute are finding more options available when it comes to super high speed internet services.   Bundling the internet product into an Xfinity package will certainly save you some money compared to paying the stand alone price.

How can i see if this is in my area? My current phone company wont bring their DSL down to where i live even though its only 5 or 6 miles at most up from where i live. They say im to far out. I have dialup now but me and my husband have been waiting a very long time for good high speed internet. Sometimes i feel like me and those that live in my community are being punished because we choose to live out of city limits and in the country. I also feel that with all of the technology we have why cant those of us who live in rural areas have high speed internet the same as everyboby else. I have direct Tv.

I’m not too pleased with how these cable and internet prices are going up and up. Then again everything in America is going up and up in price (except for salaries). What many people do not realize is that although these insanely fast speeds are available, very few homes needed. The average home really only needs between 3-10Mbps for downloading depending on how many computer/ devices will be using the internet and what it is used for. Most Americans who simply pay bills online, do online gaming, download and watch movies from the internet would be perfectly happy with 3-10Mbps. The performance internet from Comcast is $42.95 but if you compare the same speed with their competitors, they offer it for $50(Verizon) and $45(AT&T). To state that a price of $43 from Comcast is expensive is to say that all internet providers at that level are expensive.
