When considering which satellite TV company to go with, the programming, or content available is generally the prime consideration. DIRECTV programming is among the best you can get for your dollar today. DIRECTV offers a programming package for everyone.

DIRECTV packages are under the headings Family, Choice, Choice Xtra, Choice Ultimate, and Premier headings.

Prices start and $29.99 per month and go up from there. DIRECTV deals are designed to allow the customer to get a full year of programming at a reduced price, as most packages for new customers include a monthly bill credit for the first year. Thus the packages discussed here quote the first year price. Be sure to check the fine print for pricing beyond the first year.

The DIRECTV Family package is the most basic package offered. All of the channels are “family friendly” and include selections such as Disney, Toon Disney, Discovery Kids and Nickelodeon. This also is the only package that does not offer a promotional discount during the first year of service. Local channels are included in this package as well. There are not any music channels in the Family Package.

The DIRECTV Choice package is a good choice for first time satellite television buyers. This package includes over 150 channels including local programming. Several XM Radio channels are also available. All of the big name cable channels are included here such as ESPN, CNN, MTV and VH1.

The DIRECTV ChoiceXtra Package is the next step up on the programming ladder. This package includes everything in the Choice Package plus about 50 additional channels. Additional channels you will find here include E! The Entertainment channel, Oxygen, Speed, and the Fox Movie Channel.

The newest package introduced by DIRECTV is the Choice Ultimate bundle.  Here you get everything listed above and 11 premium movie channels.  These are some of the secondary channels like Encore so you will still have to pay an additional monthly fee if you are looking for HBO or Starz.

Are you a fan of HD content?  DIRECTV charges $10 a month to add in high definition channels to any package, but there is now a way around that.  If you subscribe to the Choice Xtra or higher package and sign up for automatic bill payment, then you will receive an offsetting credit each month to cover your high definition service.

For the ultimate in satellite television, the DIRECTV Premier Package gives you over 265 video and audio channels. You’ll never complain again that there’s nothing on TV as this package includes over 30 movie channels, and more than 30 specialty and regional sports channels.
